National Security Office "Conducts Cybersecurity Readiness Inspection for One Month"

Director Kim Seong-han's Policy for On-site Visits to Cybersecurity Agencies
Meeting to Review Cooperation System to Prevent Crises in the Medical Field
Security Office: "Strengthening Systematic Response from a National Security Perspective"

[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] The National Security Office has decided to actively respond to increasing cyber threats such as cyberattacks on domestic academic societies by international hacking organizations, customer data leaks and service disruptions at major telecommunications companies, cyberattacks targeting countries linked to the Ukraine war, and ransomware attacks aimed at corporate fund theft.

On the 9th, the National Security Office stated, "Recognizing the seriousness of the current domestic and international cyber situation, we plan to continue inspecting the overall national cyber security readiness throughout February to prevent it from escalating into a national security crisis."

Director Kim Seong-han of the National Security Office will personally visit institutions responsible for cyber security of the public, corporations, public sectors, and national defense to inspect their readiness. He also plans to encourage field workers and managers to maintain vigilance and focus on crisis management.

Regarding the medical sector, which is directly linked to citizens' lives, a meeting will be held to inspect the preparedness and cooperation systems of related agencies such as the Ministry of Health and Welfare, major hospitals, the National Intelligence Service, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the National Police Agency to prevent crisis situations like ransomware infections.

Following up on the cyberattack readiness inspection meeting held in December last year for the financial sector, Director Kim will visit the Financial Monitoring Center to check the implementation status of response measures and listen to difficulties faced on-site.

Given the escalating security crisis, Director Kim plans to instruct thorough monitoring during future site visits and inspection meetings, emphasizing that complacency could turn into a fatal boomerang of crisis.

He will also urge agencies at all levels to proactively inspect their readiness while securing recovery capabilities assuming the worst-case scenarios.

The National Security Office explained, "We will continue to strengthen systematic responses from a national security perspective regarding information and communication networks and services of major infrastructure directly related to citizens' lives and the national economy, such as energy and transportation."
