Jeju Western Fire Department Holds Joint Meeting for Pig Farm Fire Prevention

[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Western Fire Station (Chief Kim Young-ho) announced on the 9th that it held a joint meeting on the 8th to prevent pig farm fires, attended by about 30 members of the Korea Pork Producers Association Jeju Branch and administrative district officials.

Within the jurisdiction of Jeju Western Fire Station, 194 pig farms, accounting for 83% of all pig farms on Jeju Island, are scattered in eup and myeon areas. Most pig farms are located far from fire stations, making initial response difficult in case of fire and causing significant property damage due to rapid fire spread.

Looking at the pig farm fire occurrence status over the past five years (2018?2022), 22 out of 27 cases (81.5%) occurred in the western region, and the property damage from pig farm fires in the western region amounted to about 3.1 billion KRW, accounting for 69% of the total damage on Jeju Island (about 4.5 billion KRW).

Through this meeting, Jeju Western Fire Station focused discussions on spreading recent pig farm fire cases and education on prevention measures for similar cases, maintaining mutual cooperation systems between pig farmers and fire stations for pig farm fire prevention and damage mitigation, and creating an environment for voluntary safety management by related parties.

Chief Kim Young-ho said, “We plan to thoroughly prevent pig farm fires and minimize damage through initial suppression by conducting year-round joint safety inspections with related organizations, establishing a safety information SMS alert system, virtual fire dispatch training, and on-site safety consulting.”
