Choe Sang-mok, Chief Economic Secretary, Requests Support from Lee Jin-bok, Chief Political Secretary
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Park Wansu, Governor of Gyeongnam Province, visited the Presidential Office on the 8th to request government support for the province's pending projects.
According to Gyeongnam Province, Governor Park attended the Central Integrated Defense Meeting held at the Blue House in the morning, where he discussed measures against North Korean nuclear threats, terrorism, and cyber threats with the President, Prime Minister, Cabinet members, city and provincial governors, and military, police, and fire officials.
In the afternoon, he met with Choi Sangmok, Senior Secretary for Economic Affairs, and Lee Jinbok, Senior Secretary for Political Affairs, at the Presidential Office.
He proposed ▲Gyeongnam's participation in government-NASA cooperative projects ▲establishment of the Industrial Manpower Support Agency and the Immigration and Immigration Management Agency ▲development project for export-oriented SMR advanced manufacturing process technology ▲second relocation of public institutions in the Seoul metropolitan area to Gyeongnam Province ▲designation of new national industrial complexes.
He also mentioned ▲expansion of metropolitan transportation networks for regional balanced development ▲construction of a new port business center ▲establishment of a medical school and increase in enrollment to expand medical services in Gyeongnam ▲creation of a Namhaean Tourism Development Agency to develop premium tourist destinations.
To Senior Secretary Choi, Governor Park said, “With the scheduled launch of the Space Aviation Agency this year, Gyeongnam plans to actively establish a space aviation industry ecosystem through the creation of a space industry cluster, technological advancement, and corporate support.”
He added, “Please allow Gyeongnam Province to actively participate in government-NASA cooperative projects, including satellite manufacturing and utilization, future urban air mobility in the space aviation sector, and the establishment of an astronaut training center.”
He explained the difficulties faced by local industries due to mismatches between job seekers and employers in manufacturing, agriculture, and fisheries sectors, urging the government to prepare national-level countermeasures.
He also requested that the export-oriented SMR advanced manufacturing process technology development project be promoted as a government preliminary feasibility study project.
To Senior Secretary Lee, he proposed, “To make manufacturing and tourism industries new growth engines for South Korea, we need to create a marine tourism belt along the Namhae coast,” suggesting the creation of a General Yi Sun-sin Victory Site Pilgrimage Route and the establishment of the Namhaean Tourism Development Agency.
Governor Park pointed out, “The number of doctors in Gyeongnam is 2.5 per 1,000 people, significantly below the national average of 3.1,” and “the medical school enrollment is only one-sixth of that in Jeonbuk and Gwangju regions with similar population sizes,” emphasizing the need to establish a medical school in Gyeongnam and increase enrollment in existing medical schools.
Both senior secretaries responded, “We will take an interest in Gyeongnam Province’s proposals and actively support them.”
In response, Governor Park said, “We will continue to identify issues for regional economic recovery and resolving residents’ inconveniences and consistently propose them to the government.”
