Busan City Provides $100,000 in Earthquake Relief Funds for Turkey

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Busan City announced that it will provide $100,000 (approximately 126 million KRW) in relief funds to help T?rkiye, where thousands of deaths have occurred due to an unprecedented magnitude 7.8 earthquake.


T?rkiye is a country that shares a special brotherly bond with South Korea and Busan.


During the Korean War, T?rkiye dispatched 21,212 troops to assist South Korea, with 1,005 soldiers killed in action. Among them, the remains of 462 soldiers are interred at the Busan United Nations Memorial Cemetery.


In particular, Busan has maintained a continuous friendly cooperative relationship as a sister city with Istanbul, T?rkiye since 2002.


This relief fund support was directly decided and instructed by Mayor Park Hyung-joon to express condolences and hope for the swift recovery and stabilization of T?rkiye, which has a special connection with Busan, and to promptly provide humanitarian aid such as relief supplies to the disaster victims in T?rkiye.


Mayor Park said, “I express deep sorrow over the unexpected major earthquake in T?rkiye, and Busan City will stand in solidarity to help the people of T?rkiye who have suffered great damage and assist in recovery efforts.” He added, “I hope this relief fund will bring some comfort to the disaster victims in T?rkiye who are facing difficulties, and Busan will continue to participate actively in the swift recovery.”

Busan City has continuously made efforts for mutual cooperation and coexistence in the international community by providing support such as 100 million KRW for the 2008 Sichuan earthquake recovery in China, $100,000 for the 2013 typhoon damage recovery in the Philippines, $50,000 for the 2016 Ecuador earthquake recovery, COVID-19 relief supplies to sister cities in China in 2020, $100,000 for the 2022 typhoon damage support in the Philippines, and $100,000 for the 2022 Ukraine war damage support.
