Hollywood actor Andy Serkis is teaming up with director Kim Joo-hwan to create 'Yokai War.'
'Yokai War' is a series that depicts the story of notorious Eastern yokai, who have been enemies for thousands of years, joining forces to fight against yokai from Europe across the sea. Directed and written by Kim Joo-hwan, known for 'Midnight Runners' (2017) and 'The Divine Fury' (2019), the series is co-produced by Climax Studio and Imaginarium Productions.
Imaginarium Productions is a company founded in 2011 by actor-director Andy Serkis and producer Jonathan Cavendish. The company has produced films such as 'Darling' starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy, 'Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle' starring Christian Bale, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Cate Blanchett, horror films like 'The Ritual' and 'Nobody Gets Out Alive,' as well as several TV series. This year, they are set to release 'Next Goal Wins,' directed by Taika Waititi and starring Michael Fassbender and Elisabeth Moss, following the success of 'Jojo Rabbit.'
Andy Serkis is known for his performance capture roles as Gollum in 'The Lord of the Rings' and Caesar in 'Planet of the Apes,' and has recently produced numerous films including 'Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage.'
Byun Seung-min, CEO of Climax Studio, said, "We are very excited to challenge a new form of global production with Imaginarium, working on an IP (intellectual property) that can expand into various fields. It will be an interesting project."
Jonathan Cavendish, producer at Imaginarium, expressed confidence, saying, "Bringing complex characters with outstanding charm to the screen is what Imaginarium does best. We look forward to developing the dynamic, rollercoaster-like story of 'Yokai War' together with Climax Studio. It will definitely be unlike anything seen before."
Director Kim Joo-hwan stated, "Through a fantasy action drama featuring Eastern and Western yokai, I want to offer new enjoyment to global audiences."
