[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is expanding its video English learning support project to improve the English skills of underprivileged students in the district and provide learning opportunities with native speakers.
According to Nam-gu on the 8th, the video English learning support project is part of a cultural education special zone initiative aimed at nurturing global talents. It was established to support English learning for students from socially disadvantaged families and general residents in the district every year.
Starting this year, Nam-gu has significantly lowered the eligibility criteria for video English learning support with native speakers to improve the English skills of students from socially disadvantaged families, including basic livelihood security recipients, near-poverty groups, persons with disabilities, single-parent families, and multicultural families, and has also increased the tuition support amount.
In particular, to help build English skills from the time of entering elementary school, support previously provided only to students in third grade and above has been extended to first graders, and the monthly tuition support amount has been raised from 30,000 KRW to 35,000 KRW.
Applications for video English learning can be made through the Nam-gu Office website’s Participation World or the Nam-gu Office Native Speaker Video English website.
The monthly tuition ranges from a minimum of 35,000 KRW to a maximum of 89,000 KRW depending on whether the lessons are one-on-one or one-to-four with a native speaker and the frequency of 2 to 3 sessions per week. Socially disadvantaged families receive 35,000 KRW in monthly tuition support.
General residents are responsible for the full tuition fee.
For inquiries about the video English learning support project, contact the Nam-gu Office Education and Sports Division or the Video English Counseling Center.
A Nam-gu official stated, “We will do our best to operate the video English learning support project so that children from vulnerable groups can receive English conversation education at an affordable cost.”
