Jungnang-gu Takes First Step Toward Sustainable Development City

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi) has taken the first step toward introducing ESG administration. On the afternoon of the 6th, the district held the ‘Jungnang-type ESG Policy Introduction Advisory Meeting’ with experts from various fields.

ESG stands for Environment, Social, and Governance, and refers to a method that pursues sustainable development and reflects social and ethical values in corporate management. Recently, due to climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the continuous increase in environmental issues, the importance of introducing ESG has spread beyond corporations to the public sector.

Accordingly, the district held the expert advisory meeting to quickly introduce ESG values throughout the district administration and respond to the changing policy environment.

At the meeting, Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi and a total of 10 experts from fields including environment, society, governance, education, and labor gathered to explore the direction and tasks for Jungnang-type ESG administration.

In addition, they discussed establishing an ESG system foundation reflecting the characteristics of the district administration and the local area, setting Jungnang-type ESG indicators, and ways to raise awareness.

The district aims to enact the Sustainable Development Ordinance this year to lay the foundation for introducing ESG policies. Furthermore, through establishing basic strategies and implementation plans for sustainable development, it plans to create an environment for the effective introduction of ESG administration. Future efforts will also include developing performance indicators and discovering key projects in each field.

Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi of Jungnang-gu said, “ESG administration is a major task for communities preparing for the future, and Jungnang-gu believes that by participating in this, it can create greater social value. We will swiftly promote the Jungnang-type ESG administration, which took its first step with this advisory meeting, to realize a sustainable city and further improve the quality of life for our residents.”
