Hyundai Heavy Industries to Recruit Specialized Technical Talent This Year... Aiming to Train 1,000 Professionals

Securing Stable Workload

[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] Hyundai Heavy Industries Technical Training Center, the nation's top education and training institution, will take a more active role this year in nurturing skilled technical talent with expertise in response to the increasing demand for manpower in the shipbuilding industry.

Hyundai Heavy Industries has renamed the existing 'Technical Trainee Development Program' to the 'Professional Technician Development Program' and plans to focus on cultivating about 1,000 technical talents this year.

First, by the 15th (Wednesday), they plan to recruit about 130 people in the fields of hull assembly (welding and fitting), ship piping, ship electrical, and ship machinery. From March to May, for two months, trainees will undergo both practical and theoretical training at the Hyundai Heavy Industries Technical Training Center.

Trainees will systematically learn welding skills, blueprint reading, and various vocational qualities necessary for on-site work from professional instructors, equipping themselves with the capabilities of specialized technicians tailored to the shipbuilding industry. The training is completely free of charge.

During the training, trainees will receive a monthly scholarship of 1 million KRW, including a training allowance, and Hyundai Heavy Industries provides free dormitory accommodation for residents outside Ulsan or in Ulju-gun. Local governments are also strengthening support policies for nurturing technical personnel, such as providing 3 million KRW relocation settlement expenses when trainees move their residence to Dong-gu, Ulsan after employment in the shipbuilding sector.

In particular, top performers in the hull assembly field will be hired immediately upon completion and can enjoy various employment benefits, including preferential treatment when applying for production technology positions at Hyundai Heavy Industries in the future.

The Professional Technician Development Program is open to anyone wishing to work in the shipbuilding field regardless of gender, age, military service, education, or major, and applications can be submitted through the Hyundai Heavy Industries Technical Training Center website.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Heavy Industries has actively pursued securing technical talent to strengthen future-leading technological competitiveness, resuming open recruitment for production technology positions last year after seven years and continuing recruitment this year.

Hyundai Heavy Industries achieved about 132% of its annual order target last year (67 vessels, 15 billion USD), and with expectations to continue securing orders steadily from the beginning of this year, including a rally in gas carrier orders, it plans to focus on nurturing technical talent to contribute to the shipbuilding industry's resurgence.

A Hyundai Heavy Industries official stated, “Skilled technical talent is the core to strengthening competitiveness in the shipbuilding industry,” adding, “By securing technical talent through the Professional Technician Development Program, we will lay the foundation for the resurgence of K-Shipbuilding.”
