[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Song Jong-gu] Namhae-gun, Gyeongnam Province has officially launched the "Clean Fishery Regeneration Project," a public contest project by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, in Gangjin Bay.
The Clean Fishery Regeneration Project is a national and provincial government-supported initiative carried out in overcrowded and aging aquaculture farms and surrounding marine areas.
It is promoted to remove polluted sediments and purify the seabed environment to improve fishery productivity and create a sustainable fishery environment.
The project is implemented by dividing the Gangjin Bay area into three locations, with a budget of 5 billion KRW per site (2.5 billion KRW from the national government, 0.5 billion KRW from the provincial government, and 2 billion KRW from the county government).
Gangjin Bay is a major production area for small cockles and short-necked clams, with 78% of Gyeongnam's total small cockle aquaculture fishing rights located there. It is also designated as a production area for export shellfish, making it an important region for seafood production.
Namhae-gun expects the Clean Fishery Regeneration Project to have a significant effect on revitalizing the aquaculture industry by improving the quality of farmed seafood produced in Gangjin Bay, shortening growth periods, and increasing production volume.
County Governor Jang Chung-nam stated, "Through the Clean Fishery Regeneration Project, we will promote the improvement of the fishery environment in Gangjin Bay to enhance fishery productivity and increase fishermen's income. We will also continue to boldly invest budgets to restore the reputation of Gangjin Bay as a once pristine golden fishery."
