[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province has completed the installation of a 'Smart Power Monitoring System' in 96 old houses and commercial buildings around Singal Five-way Intersection.
Yongin City announced on the 6th that as part of the Singal Five-way Intersection Smart Urban Regeneration Project, it recruited target households last year, completed the system installation, and began full-scale service from the 1st of this month.
The area around Singal Five-way Intersection has over 70% of buildings that are more than 20 years old, and many buildings contain goshiwon (small lodging rooms), making it a high-risk area where electrical fires caused by leakage current could lead to serious accidents.
The Smart Power Monitoring System installs Internet of Things (IoT) sensors on the distribution boards of old commercial buildings or houses and links them with an app.
Through the app, users can check real-time electricity usage, and if abnormal current flow occurs, it detects and notifies users, effectively preventing electrical safety accidents.
During the system installation process, the city also detected leakage currents. While installing the system in a one-room type house, it identified unusually high leakage current originating from an old heating mat and took preventive measures.
Additionally, leakage current was detected in a butcher shop in a commercial building, and it was found that an old electronic scale was the cause.
A city official stated, "We expect the Smart Power Monitoring System to greatly help in efficient energy use and in preventing safety accidents in old houses and commercial buildings," adding, "We will do our best to promote the Smart Urban Regeneration Project so that residents can live safer and more convenient lives."
