[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province will operate multicultural family supporters this year.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 4th that it recently appointed 157 'Multicultural Family Supporters' composed of senior marriage immigrants who help newly arrived marriage immigrants in the province adapt to the local community and Korean life.
The supporters appointed this time were recommended by city and county offices, targeting marriage immigrants who have been in the country for more than three years and have an intermediate level of Korean.
The supporters will engage in supporting adaptation to the local community by discovering new marriage immigrants, registering members at multicultural family centers and linking programs, accompanying and guiding them to administrative offices, hospitals, and banks, and counseling on life difficulties such as child-rearing, social adaptation, and economic hardships.
Choi Young-mook, head of the Family Multicultural Division of the province, emphasized, "Multicultural Family Supporters are benchmarked as an excellent case by other local governments," and added, "We will actively support improving the quality of life for multicultural families, including newly arrived marriage immigrants."
Gyeonggi Province has been operating multicultural family supporters since 2012. Last year, it achieved results including 325 cases of discovering new members, 1,144 cases linked with programs at jurisdictional centers, 5,831 cases of life support, and 364 cases of online activities.
