Park Jin Meets US National Security Advisor, Praises President Yoon's Successful US Visit Cooperation

"North Korean Nuclear Issue as a Priority for South Korea and the U.S."

[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] On the 2nd (local time), Foreign Minister Park Jin met with Jake Sullivan, U.S. National Security Advisor, at the White House and exchanged views on strengthening the Korea-U.S. alliance on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the alliance, the Korean Peninsula issue, economic security and advanced technology cooperation, and regional and global issues.


Minister Park stated that this year marks the monumental 70th anniversary of the Korea-U.S. alliance and proposed building a future alliance that contributes together to solving 21st-century challenges based on the proud achievements of the alliance so far. In this context, he also emphasized close cooperation for the successful visit of President Yoon Suk-yeol to the U.S. this year.

National Security Advisor Sullivan agreed with Minister Park's remarks and pledged that the U.S. National Security Council would make its best efforts to ensure that President Yoon's visit to the U.S. serves as an opportunity to present a future blueprint for the alliance. Both sides reaffirmed that the complete denuclearization of North Korea and the North Korean nuclear issue remain priorities for Korea and the U.S., and agreed to continue close cooperation between the two countries.


Regarding North Korea's provocations, they agreed to respond firmly while continuing efforts to block North Korea's cyber activities and funding, and to encourage the international community to implement Security Council resolutions.


They also agreed to promote China’s constructive role based on the recognition that progress in denuclearization is a shared interest of Korea, the U.S., and China. They shared the view to strengthen efforts to properly inform the international community about human rights violations.


Minister Park evaluated the U.S. progress efforts, including the commercial electric vehicle tax credit related to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). He proposed maintaining the current momentum to achieve results satisfactory to the industry and further strengthening Korea-U.S. economic security cooperation in the 70th anniversary year of the alliance. Both sides agreed to expand cooperation in core and advanced technologies such as semiconductors, space, quantum, and cyber for the joint prosperity of the younger generation, the future of the alliance.
