[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] The reading platform Millie’s Library announced on the 3rd that it will release a docent book for "The Great Gatsby," considered the essence of early 20th-century American literature.
A docent book is multimedia content designed to help readers engage with reading "easily and enjoyably." Like a docent who explains exhibits to visitors at museums or art galleries, experts explain steady sellers and bestsellers that were once difficult to approach, tailored to the readers’ level of understanding.
The released docent book "The Great Gatsby" is a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which continues to receive unwavering love worldwide. Set in the summer of 1922 on Long Island, New York, it sharply depicts American society after the chaos and shock following World War I and the crumbling American Dream. Over more than 100 years since its publication, it has maintained broad popularity through adaptations into films and musicals.
The "Great Gatsby" docent book is divided into Part 1, which explains the overall story, and Part 2, which provides an analysis of the work. Part 1 is produced in the form of a webtoon to aid story comprehension and includes audiovisual interactive elements to stimulate interest.
The docent is Professor Kim Bong-jung, an American history expert who appeared on tvN’s "Naked History of the World," where he cleverly covered important American history such as President Lincoln, the Great Depression, and the Vietnam War. Based on the peak economic period of the 1920s America, he analyzes various characters appearing in "The Great Gatsby." Additionally, he shares interesting background knowledge, including the messages embedded in the work and the reason behind the title "The Great Gatsby."
Kim Tae-hyung, Head of Content Business at Millie’s Library, said, “We expect the docent book to resolve readers’ curiosities about literary works and provide an opportunity to approach books from a new perspective.” He added, “Starting with the release of the ‘Great Gatsby’ docent book, Millie’s Library plans to continuously develop docent books utilizing not only books but also movies and dramas.”
Meanwhile, Millie’s Library offers various multimedia content including the e-book, audiobook, and chat book of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s "The Great Gatsby," as well as e-books and audiobooks of "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."
