Family and Acquaintances Outraged by 'Fake Funeral'
"I Wanted to Know Who Would Come... I Apologize"
A man in his 60s from Brazil staged a fake funeral by pretending to be dead, only to be criticized by acquaintances and family members.
According to recent reports from foreign media including the UK Daily Mail, Bautazar Remus (60) posted a photo of the entrance of a hospital located in S?o Paulo on his social media service (SNS) in mid-last month, along with a picture that made it seem as if he was hospitalized. Then, on the 17th of last month, he posted a message hinting at a farewell to family and acquaintances due to worsening health.
Afterwards, Remus's SNS profile displayed a notification message stating, "On January 18th at 7:30 PM, a memorial service will be held for him at the Curitiba chapel." The sudden news of his death caused great sorrow not only among Remus's acquaintances but also his family. Especially, the family was shocked even more because they were unaware that he was ill. Acquaintances left comments on Remus's post saying, "What is going on all of a sudden?" while expressing condolences for the deceased.
However, those gathered at the chapel on the day of the memorial service were taken aback. Remus's voice was heard through the speakers, and he actually appeared in person.
In an interview with local media, he said, "I thought about this idea five months ago, and I wanted to look like I was really dead," adding, "I wanted to know who would actually come to my birthday and funeral."
He continued, "I sincerely apologize to my family, acquaintances, and many others," and asked for forgiveness, saying, "I did not want to hurt or upset anyone."
Remus's nephew criticized, "I went directly to the S?o Paulo hospital to confirm that my uncle was not dead," and added, "The family is all shocked by this extreme bad taste."
Netizens who heard the news also criticized Remus's actions. They responded with comments such as "Playing with death as a subject deserves condemnation," "It is absurd to hold a fake funeral out of curiosity," and "He should sincerely apologize to those around him."
