[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 31st that from the 6th to the 10th of next month, it will conduct intensive hygiene inspections of delivery restaurants serving Malatang, Yangkkochi, and chicken in cooperation with local governments nationwide.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry has been inspecting delivery food establishments to ensure delivery food safety starting in 2021. Last year, inspections targeted Chinese cuisine in the first quarter, jokbal and bossam in the second quarter, gimbap and bunsik in the third quarter, and chicken in the fourth quarter.

This year, the inspection targets will be expanded beyond high-consumption items to include items reflecting consumption trends. The first quarter inspection targets are approximately 2,800 delivery restaurants that prepare and sell Malatang, Yangkkochi, and chicken, which have had no inspection history or have had non-compliance records in the past two years.

The main inspection items include compliance with hygienic handling standards for food and cooking facilities, compliance with storage standards for raw materials, whether expired products past their consumption (distribution) date are stored or used, and whether spoiled, deteriorated, or unlabeled raw materials are used, all in accordance with the Food Sanitation Act. Additionally, collected cooked food will be tested for food poisoning bacteria concurrently.
