Local police reported that Smith was on a hunting trip with another man and his pet dog.
At the time of the incident, Smith was sitting in the passenger seat. However, a German Shepherd dog riding in the truck pulled the trigger of a rifle placed on the back seat, and Smith was shot in the back.
Paramedics arrived and performed emergency procedures including CPR, but Smith ultimately died at the scene. Fortunately, the driver was reported to be unharmed.
The Sumner County Sheriff's Office explained in an email to ABC, "The rifle stock was placed on the back seat, and the barrel was resting against the console box, pointing toward the deceased."
The Wellington Fire and Rescue Department stated, "Loaded weapons should not be left inside vehicles," and added, "If a gun must be left in a car, the ammunition should be removed or the safety engaged."
