[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] The number of Tmap users visiting Incheon International Airport during the Lunar New Year holiday period increased about sevenfold compared to last year’s Lunar New Year holiday. During the same period, visitors to movie theaters nationwide also nearly tripled.
Tmap Mobility announced on the 27th that the total number of Tmap navigation requests during the Lunar New Year holiday period (January 21?24) was 32,482,436. This figure is about 6.7 million higher than during last year’s Chuseok holiday.
As this was the first Lunar New Year holiday since the lifting of COVID-19 social distancing measures, car travel volume increased noticeably. During the 2020 Lunar New Year holiday period (February 23?27), when COVID-19 was rampant, the number of Tmap navigation requests was 20,299,665, which increased by 60.5% this year. During last year’s Lunar New Year holiday (January 30?February 2), 26,009,885 people used Tmap navigation services, which is 25.0% less than this year.
The number of Tmap users who chose overseas travel instead of visiting their hometowns during this Lunar New Year holiday increased sevenfold compared to the previous year. Last year, the number of navigation requests to Incheon International Airport was only 8,851, but during this Lunar New Year holiday period, it surged to 62,774, an increase of 609%.
The most navigated location on Tmap was Incheon International Airport (Terminal 1). During last year’s Lunar New Year holiday, Starfield Hanam and Goyang stores ranked first and second respectively. In contrast, Incheon International Airport did not even enter the top five. This is evidence that the number of overseas travelers has significantly increased in one year. In the case of Gimpo International Airport, the number of navigation requests during the Lunar New Year holiday increased by more than 1,000 compared to last year.
The number of Tmap users visiting movie theaters increased 2.5 times compared to last year. The popularity of ‘The First Slam Dunk,’ which stirred nostalgia among men in their 30s and 40s, along with ‘Avatar 2,’ returning after 13 years, and ‘Negotiation,’ which caused a sensation right after its release, are believed to have heated up theaters nationwide. The demand for leisure and cultural activities, which had been suppressed due to COVID-19, also significantly increased during the Lunar New Year holiday.
