Installation of 1km Wooden Streetlights and More
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-sun] Daegu Dong-gu Office announced on the 26th the detailed project plan for the Wood-Friendly City Creation Project, including the creation of a wood-specialized street on the road to Bullo Ancient Tomb Village.
Bullo Ancient Tomb Village was finally selected on the 20th in the 2023 Wood-Friendly City Creation Project contest promoted by the Korea Forest Service, securing a budget of 5 billion KRW, including 2.5 billion KRW in national funds.
Daegu Dong-gu Office plans to start the project this year and complete it by 2026 using this funding.
The project is named “Mokhyangmanri (木香萬里) Bullo Ancient Tomb Village,” and under the vision of creating a village where people breathe with the forest and coexist with trees, nine projects will be carried out in line with four policy directions: wood-specialized street creation, use of wood in buildings, establishment of a woodworking experience center, and wood education programs.
The creation of the wood-specialized street is a project to secure pedestrian safety and improve street landscape, consisting of two projects: “Palgong-ro and Gobun-ro Wood-Specialized Street Creation” and “Pedestrian-Friendly Wood Road Creation on Bullocheon-ro and Gobun Ganeun-gil.”
Palgong-ro, located on the route from Daegu International Airport to Palgong Mountain, and Gobun-ro, which leads to the Bullo Ancient Tomb Cluster, will be developed into a 1 km “wood-specialized street” by installing wooden decks, wooden street lamps, and bus shelters.
Secondly, on Bullocheon-ro, a sidewalk will be secured on the embankment upper space, and wooden decks and benches will be installed. On Gobun Ganeun-gil, which connects the surroundings of the Bullo Ancient Tomb Cluster, wooden decks and pergolas will be installed to foster it as a desirable walking street attraction.
Also, true to the wood-friendly city concept, wood will be used in facilities established to secure the driving force for village development and to revitalize the village. Specifically, two projects will be carried out: “Establishment of Bullo Transmission Center as a Startup Incubating Facility” and “Establishment of Bulbongine Repair Center as a Wood House Repair Hub.”
Bullo Transmission Center is a startup incubating facility for entrepreneurs who have learned Makgeolli brewing techniques in collaboration with Daegu Takju Hapdong, a representative local company. “Bullo Transmission Center 1” will be newly constructed as a wooden building with a modern sensibility suited to young customers’ tastes, and “Bullo Transmission Center 2” will be remodeled from an existing building to be wood-based.
Bulbongine Repair Center is a hub space for repairing old wooden houses in the Bullo-dong area. It will conduct house repair-related maintenance and education, and will be constructed as a wooden building to enhance understanding of wood.
Bullo Transmission Center and Bulbongine Repair Center are expected to create synergy effects with the wood-friendly city project as part of the Bullo-dong Urban Regeneration New Deal Project.
The establishment of the woodworking experience center aims to create a village attraction through wood and improve residents’ quality of life, consisting of three projects: “Establishment of Bulroae (愛) Wood Culture Community Center,” “Establishment of HIT Wood Utilization Startup Platform,” and “Establishment of Namuya Nolja Children’s Wood Culture Playground.”
“Bulroae,” which will be used as a hub for spreading wood culture in the future, will be a three-story building housing a wood experience education room where citizens can easily and familiarly learn, a woodworking product production and sales space, and a shared caf?.
HIT, the main space for wood education programs and a village startup platform, will serve as an educational institution responsible for youth startup education and a startup platform including childcare facilities for entrepreneurs’ children. It will be constructed with wood materials inside and outside the four-story building.
Namuya Nolja will be an eco-friendly wooden experience playground for children located adjacent to the Bullo Ancient Tomb Cluster, a representative tourist site in Dong-gu, with more than 10 types of natural wood play facilities such as tree houses planned.
Various educational programs will be operated to raise awareness of wood value and form wood culture discourse. Specifically, these include “Woodwind Instrument Making Class Namu Sori,” “Bullo Wooden Architecture Class,” and “Woodcraft DIY Class Ttukttak,” which are scheduled to operate from 2025 in line with facility establishment.
The woodwind instrument making class “Namu Sori” plans to link artistic activities using wood by completing various professional woodwind instrument production courses and producing creative woodwind instruments, fitting for Daegu as a UNESCO City of Music Creativity.
Also, the Bullo Wooden Architecture Class will operate specialized education programs on wooden architecture, including understanding wood materials, basic and practical education on wooden houses, and field training courses, to become the center of wooden architecture education as a genuine wood-friendly city.
The woodcraft DIY class “Ttukttak” will operate woodworking classes focusing on DIY products that anyone can easily make to induce interest in wood.
Yoon Seok-jun, head of Daegu Dong-gu Office, said, “Above all, the significance is great as this achievement was made through constant communication with residents rather than a one-way approach centered on the authorities,” adding, “We will respect the long history value of Bullo-dong and at the same time strive to improve residents’ lives through region-tailored strategies.”
