Haenam-gun Works Tirelessly on Snow Removal Without Lunar New Year Holiday Breaks

Township-wide Snow Removal Conducted, Over 1,000 Employees Participate

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, prioritized the safety of residents by promptly responding with snow removal work involving all employees on the first workday after the Lunar New Year holiday.

On the 25th, according to the county, County Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan and over 1,000 public officials participated in snow removal operations focused on the town and township areas where heavy snowfall occurred during the Lunar New Year holiday.

The snow removal work was carried out thoroughly in shaded sidewalks and alleys with heavy foot traffic, fearing that the snow, which fell amid a severe cold wave dropping to minus 13 degrees Celsius early on the 25th, would turn into icy roads.

In particular, for major roads in towns and townships, snow removal was conducted from the morning of the 24th through the 25th using 79 pieces of equipment including snowplows and spreaders, and 156 personnel were mobilized. Intensive snow removal was also carried out in five key management districts including Useuljae and Swaennojae.

Haenam-gun has been experiencing the strongest cold wave this winter, with cold wave, strong wind, and heavy snow warnings issued sequentially since the 23rd, and as of 7 a.m. on the 25th, an average snowfall of 5 cm has been recorded.

Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan said, “Since the cold wave is expected to continue through the weekend, all employees are conducting snow removal work before the roads become icy to help ensure the safety of residents even a little.” He also urged, “Residents should familiarize themselves with action guidelines during cold waves and heavy snow and prepare to prevent damage to crops.”

Meanwhile, in relation to the cold wave during the Lunar New Year holiday, emergency contact networks have been established by departments and townships, and continuous monitoring is being conducted in areas closely related to residents’ lives such as vulnerable households, aquaculture farm management, and water pipe freezing to prevent damage.

Residents are also being actively informed of heavy snow and cold wave action guidelines through village broadcasts and promotional materials, and the cold wave blind spots are being minimized through situation checks by the local autonomous disaster prevention group and disaster helpers.
