[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The prosecution has decided to suspend Choi Seo-won's (formerly Choi Soon-sil) sentence execution for an additional five weeks.
Cheongju District Prosecutors' Office announced on the 25th that it recently held a sentence execution suspension review committee and made this decision. Choi's side requested an extension of the suspension, stating to the prosecution that "rehabilitation is necessary after spinal surgery," and the prosecution accepted this.
Our Criminal Procedure Act stipulates that sentence execution can be suspended when there is a concern that the execution of imprisonment may significantly harm health or threaten life preservation. After being revealed as the 'secret power' behind the Park Geun-hye administration's state affairs manipulation case and indicted, Choi was sentenced to 18 years in prison, fined 20 billion won, and ordered to pay 6.3 billion won in fines in June 2020, and has been serving her sentence at Cheongju Women's Prison. On the 19th of last month, she applied for a one-month suspension of sentence execution, citing the need for spinal surgery, and Cheongju District Prosecutors' Office approved it.
