Nationwide Cold Wave Shelter Reorganization
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 25th that it will conduct an emergency inspection and reorganization of the cold wave shelters operated by local governments nationwide amid the severe cold wave sweeping across the country.
Cold wave shelters are designated and operated by local governments in facilities such as senior centers, village halls, and community centers to allow anyone to use them to escape the winter cold. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety supports their operation.
The Ministry plans to identify the current status through this emergency inspection to improve issues in the operation of cold wave shelters and enhance user convenience. Subsequently, it will analyze the problems and prepare improvement measures for a complete reorganization.
Lee Hangyeong, Director of Disaster Management at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, stated, “As the severe cold continues this year, there are concerns about cold-related illnesses among vulnerable groups,” adding, “To minimize casualties caused by the winter cold wave, we will ensure maximum use of the currently operating cold wave shelters and take measures so that there are no disruptions in their use through emergency inspections and reorganization.”
