Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, Provides 'Bicycle Safety Insurance' Coverage for All Residents

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Park Byung-gyu) announced on the 25th that it is operating the ‘Safe Bicycle Damage Insurance’ for the safe use of bicycles by district residents.


This applies to all residents and foreign registrants residing with their resident registration in Gwangsan-gu.


Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, Provides 'Bicycle Safety Insurance' Coverage for All Residents

Without a separate subscription procedure, coverage is provided for accidents occurring on bicycle roads while using a bicycle.


The main coverage includes ▲Bicycle fatal accidents (excluding those under 15 years old) 10 million KRW ▲Up to 10 million KRW for permanent disability ▲Diagnosis consolation money 100,000 to 500,000 KRW ▲Hospitalization consolation money 100,000 KRW ▲In cases where a bicycle rider causes injury or death to others and is fined (excluding those under 14 years old), support for fines, attorney fees, and processing support funds.


Since 2021, bicycle insurance has been operated annually, and this year the coverage scope will be expanded to include Personal Mobility devices (PM), and the coverage amount will be increased.


To apply for insurance benefits, submit the insurance claim form and supporting documents to the insurance company.

A Gwangsan-gu official said, “As the number of bicycle users has increased, safety accidents related to bicycles, both large and small, are also increasing. Through bicycle insurance, we aim to reduce the financial and psychological burden on Gwangsan-gu residents caused by bicycle accidents, and do our best to create a safe and pleasant bicycle usage environment.”


Meanwhile, through the first organizational restructuring of the 8th local government term, Gwangsan-gu newly established a Bicycle-Friendly Team within the Premium Road Promotion Team to be in charge of promoting bicycle use.


Going forward, plans include expanding bicycle roads, building a safe usage environment, and promoting plans and policies to activate bicycle use.
