On the first day of the Lunar New Year holiday, the 21st, the number of new COVID-19 cases was in the high 20,000s.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on that day, 27,654 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 29,982,905.
The number of new cases that day was 246 more than the previous day (27,408) and 9,045 fewer than a week earlier on the 14th (36,699). Compared to two weeks ago on the 7th of this month (53,785), it decreased by 26,131, maintaining the downward trend.
From the 15th to that day, the daily new cases for one week were 32,560 → 14,130 → 40,184 → 36,896 → 29,806 → 27,408 → 27,654. The average daily new cases during this period was 29,805, remaining in the 20,000 range.
Among the new cases, 85 were imported cases, 9 fewer than the previous day (94). Of these, 43 (50.6%) were arrivals from China. Domestic community transmission cases numbered 27,569.
By region, the cases were as follows: Gyeonggi 7,145, Seoul 5,161, Busan 1,947, Gyeongnam 1,771, Incheon 1,567, Gyeongbuk 1,368, Daegu 1,307, Chungnam 1,163, Jeonnam 937, Chungbuk 903, Jeonbuk 896, Daejeon 801, Gwangju 733, Ulsan 692, Gangwon 683, Jeju 386, Sejong 171, and quarantine 23.
The number of critically ill patients currently hospitalized was 436, 17 fewer than the previous day (453). The intensive care unit bed occupancy rate was 28.6% as of 5 p.m. the previous day. The number of deaths reported the previous day was 51, 21 more than the day before (30). The cumulative death toll is 33,185, with a cumulative fatality rate of 0.11%.
