IAEA Conducts On-Site Verification at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant

[Asia Economy Reporter Eunju Lee] The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspection team has completed on-site verification at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

Gustavo Caruso, IAEA Coordinator for Nuclear Safety and Security, stated at an online press conference on the 20th that the inspection team, composed of experts from various countries, conducted investigations in Japan from the 16th until that day.

The inspection team reviewed the preparedness of the Japan Nuclear Regulation Authority ahead of the release of contaminated water into the ocean. Coordinator Gustavo said, "The IAEA will investigate both before and after the release of contaminated water and will also monitor changes in the marine environment resulting from the discharge," adding, "Currently, inspections before the use of Japan's discharge facilities are being conducted in accordance with international safety standards."

The verification report is planned to be prepared "within three months." In response to questions about concerns from South Korea, China, and Pacific island nations regarding the release of contaminated water, Coordinator Gustavo emphasized that the IAEA is neutral and that the safety standards established by the IAEA are trustworthy.
