[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Hampyeong County, Jeollanam-do announced on the 18th that it dismantled the monument within Hampyeong Park on the 16th following the withdrawal notice of the Jeollanam-do 5·18 historic site.
The 5·18 historic site monument in Hampyeong Park was erected with a budget supported by Jeollanam-do and is made of granite with a bronze plate attached, identical in form to monuments at other historic sites within Jeollanam-do.
Until now, the 5·18 historic site monument in Hampyeong Park had been erected in a location far from the May 18, 1980 Democratization Movement, leading to divided opinions among local stakeholders.
Accordingly, the county conducted a full re-examination by the Jeollanam-do 5·18 Historic Site Committee, and following the final decision notice in December last year to dispose of the monument, dismantling work was carried out. The removed bronze plate is planned to be discarded.
A county official stated, “We will strive to preserve and manage all veterans’ facilities installed in the jurisdiction based on historical facts, and work to establish local culture and identity.”
