Following Koreans were Taiwanese at 331,100, Americans at 323,500, Vietnamese at 284,100, and Hong Kong residents at 269,300. The number of Chinese visitors was recorded at 189,000.
The Japanese government gradually reopened its borders after allowing group tours for foreigners in June last year. On October 11, it resumed visa exemption measures for 68 countries and regions worldwide, which had been suspended due to the spread of COVID-19.
Accordingly, the number of foreign visitors entering Japan, which was in the 100,000 range until August last year, exceeded 200,000 in September and increased to about 500,000 in October. It steadily rose to 934,500 in November and 1,370,000 in December.
