[Asia Economy Reporter Kwak Min-jae] Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the second-highest-ranking official in Vietnam's power hierarchy, has resigned, according to Vietnam News Agency (VNA) on the 17th.
Hailing from Quang Nam Province in south-central Vietnam, he previously served as the chairman of the local People's Committee, then as Minister of the Prime Minister's Office, Deputy Prime Minister, before assuming the position of Prime Minister in 2016 and becoming State President in April 2021.
In Vietnam, power is divided among the General Secretary, who ranks first, the State President (foreign affairs and defense), the Prime Minister (administration), and the National Assembly Chairman (legislation).
President Phuc is known to be classified as a 'pro-China faction' figure. It is unusual for a State President in Vietnam to resign suddenly.
