[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-seon] Daegu City held the groundbreaking ceremony for the first solar power generation project of the ‘Daegu Smart Industrial Complex Rooftop Solar Project’ at Daea Construction Materials in the 3rd Industrial Complex at 2 p.m. on the 17th.
The city signed a business agreement on December 12 last year with seven organizations including LS Electric, Hanwha Systems, Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems, LG Energy Solution, SRS, Daebo Information & Communication, Hanwha Asset Management, and the Industrial Complex Management Agency.
This project, with a budget of 3 trillion won, aims to build a ‘carbon-neutral leading city’ and create an eco-friendly industrial complex by installing renewable energy solar power generation facilities on the roofs of industrial complexes covering 15% of Daegu’s urban area. In connection with this, the entire 1.16 million square meters of old asbestos slate factory roofs, which are classified as a first-grade carcinogen, will be demolished to improve working conditions for local industries and promote citizens’ health.
Daea Construction Materials, participating as the first power plant of this project, installed 271 kW of solar power (installation area 1,271㎡) on a newly constructed building (building area 2,535㎡) and will receive up to 12 million won annually in rent for the next 25 years, along with various additional benefits proposed by the project operator.
In February, the slate roof installed at the Shinheung Bus Garage Maintenance Factory in the Seongseo Industrial Complex is planned to be removed. After completing related procedures such as building demolition notification and asbestos removal notification, the work will be carried out with safety facilities installed and safety equipment such as dustproof suits and masks for workers.
A Daegu city official stated, “There are about 10,000 factories in the industrial complex with old asbestos roofs that need to be removed, with a total roof area of 1.16 million square meters. We plan to start the work in earnest by accepting applications from individual businesses around March to April. Approximately 3,500 factories are expected to participate in installing solar power plants on their roofs. This project is scheduled to be completed around the end of 2025.”
Mayor Hong Joon-pyo emphasized, “This project, which attempts to transform into a carbon-neutral leading city and an eco-friendly smart industrial complex through the largest-ever private investment attraction, is now taking its first step. I once again ask for the active participation of industrial complex tenants for Daegu’s bold challenge, and the city will spare no administrative and policy support.”
