[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] The time period when traffic volume is expected to surge sharply on the Lunar New Year day, the 22nd, is predicted to be between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. At noon, the estimated travel time from Seoul to Busan is 7 hours and 36 minutes, to Gwangju 5 hours and 49 minutes, and to Daejeon 4 hours and 17 minutes.
T Map Mobility announced on the 17th the traffic forecast for this Lunar New Year holiday (21st to 24th) based on travel data from the past five years during holidays.
The best times to depart for hometowns are after 11 p.m. on the 21st, before 5 a.m. on the 22nd, or after 6 p.m. on the 22nd.
For the Seoul-Busan route, traffic volume starts to increase sharply from 3 a.m. on the 21st (5 hours 18 minutes) and is expected to peak around 10 a.m. (7 hours 31 minutes), when the most vehicles will be on the road. This is about 2 hours and 30 minutes longer than usual.
On the Lunar New Year day, the 22nd, traffic also peaks at 10 a.m. (7 hours 23 minutes) and is expected to decrease to the 4-hour range only after 6 p.m.
On the Seoul-Daejeon section, traffic volume is highest around 6 a.m. on the 21st and around noon on the 22nd, with travel times expected to be about 4 hours 10 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes. This is about 1 hour and 30 minutes longer than usual.
On the Seoul-Gwangju section, severe congestion is expected from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the 21st and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the 22nd. Travel times are expected to be about 5 to 7 hours, approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes longer than usual.
On the return trip on Lunar New Year day, traffic congestion from Busan to Seoul is expected to start from 7 a.m., with a maximum travel time of 8 hours and 4 minutes predicted by 11 p.m. Normal traffic flow is expected to resume only after midnight.
On the Daejeon-Seoul route, the highest traffic volume is expected from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on the Gwangju-Seoul route from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Travel times are expected to be 3 to 4 hours and 5 to 6 hours, respectively.
During this Lunar New Year holiday, T Map Mobility will provide features including ▲ changes to bus-only lane enforcement times ▲ changes to highway toll fees ▲ improvements to complex intersection images ▲ temporary shoulder lane guidance ▲ and improvements to restricted motorcycle traffic zones.
Bus-only lanes will be expanded and operated from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next day from the day before the holiday, the 20th, through the 24th. From the 21st to midnight on the 24th, tolls on highways will be waived except for some privately operated highways.
