Ulsan Ulju-gun Draws Blueprint for Marine Tourism

Seosaeng Marine Tourism Complex and Southern Region Tourism Development Plan

Exploring Smart Tourism Development Linked to 'Ulsan Taehwa Lake'

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dong-guk Lee] Ulju-gun, Ulsan City has embarked on establishing a blueprint to become the center of marine tourism in South Korea.

Ulju-gun is planning the development of the Seosaeng Marine Tourism Complex, a southern region tourism development plan, the construction of a Sea Garden and Sunrise Culture Center, and measures to revitalize marine tourism linked with Ulsan Taehwa Lake.

Previously, Ulju-gun has been promoting the ‘Seosaeng Marine Tourism Complex Development’ along the coastal area from Jinha to Ganjeolgot.

Recently, to meet changes in tourism conditions and new demands from tourists, a tourism complex is being developed utilizing abundant coastal scenic resources such as Ganjeolgot, Seosaeng Coast, and Jinha Beach.

The ‘Southern Region Tourism Development Plan’ led by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism aims to discover the tourism potential of historical, cultural, and natural resources in the southern region including Ulsan, Busan, Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Gyeongnam, and develop them in a wide-area linked manner to evolve into tourism hubs.

In line with this plan, Ulju-gun is promoting the construction of the Sunrise Culture Center and the creation of a Sea Garden to expand the marine culture experience base and strengthen natural recreation experiences.

Following a recent tour of ‘Ulsan Taehwa Lake,’ plans for developing smart tourism content utilizing the state-of-the-art technology concentrated in Ulsan Taehwa Lake have emerged.

Ulsan Taehwa Lake is South Korea’s first hybrid electric propulsion vessel, measuring 89.1m in length, 12.8m in width, and weighing 2,700 tons. The project was overseen by the Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency, with a total budget of 44.8 billion KRW, and was constructed by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.

On the 12th, County Governor Lee Soon-geol, County Council Chairman Kim Young-cheol, and other council members visited the vessel to receive explanations about the applied technologies and discussed plans to use Najang Port as a mooring site.

Taking advantage of Ulsan’s geographical benefits, a proposal was made to enhance the expansion of the tourism complex by enabling tourists visiting the Seosaeng Marine Tourism Complex to travel by Ulsan Taehwa Lake to neighboring local governments such as Gyeongju, Pohang, and Busan.

There was also an opinion to develop tourism products themed around the sunrise at Ganjeolgot in connection with Ulsan Taehwa Lake and incorporate this into the southern region tourism development plan to attract tourists.

County Governor Lee Soon-geol said, “We will devise various measures to develop Ulju-gun into a representative center of marine tourism in South Korea by combining beautiful coastal scenic resources with future technologies,” adding, “We will lead the marine tourism industry and create Ulju, an attractive tourist city where people want to stay.”
