"Jung Eui-sun, Hyundai Motor Chairman, Ranked No.1 in Global Auto Industry Influence" Chairman Chung Euisun of Hyundai Motor Group

[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Chung Eui-sun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, has been recognized as the most influential figure in the global automotive industry by a leading American automotive media outlet.

On the 12th, the U.S. specialized media MotorTrend announced that Chairman Chung was selected as this year's top-ranked individual among the 'Power List' of 50 people. This media outlet selects and ranks 50 influential figures in the global automotive industry every year to determine the number one. The evaluation and confidential voting process is conducted by the editors and advisory board of the media. Founded in the U.S. in 1949, the publication circulates over one million copies monthly.

The media stated, "Chairman Chung Eui-sun fulfills the role of a leader in electric vehicles and future mobility with insight into where the world and industry are headed and a passion to create a better world," adding, "He leads Hyundai Motor Group into a new era, demonstrating qualities beyond those of a typical automotive CEO."

Chairman Chung has often said, "The essential mission Hyundai Motor Group pursues is to realize everyone's dream of 'safe and free movement and peaceful life' together," redefining mobility by encompassing various fields including electrification, autonomous driving, connectivity, robotics, Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), and software.

Previously, this media ranked Chairman Chung 5th on the same list last year and 14th in 2021. Besides Chairman Chung, many Hyundai Motor Group executives appeared on this year's Power List, including Luke Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer (CCO, 3rd), Jose Munoz, Chief Operating Officer (COO, 10th), Lee Sang-yup, Head of Hyundai Design Center (28th), and Karim Habib, Head of Kia Design Center (44th). Mary Barra, Chairwoman of General Motors, ranked 2nd; Carlos Tavares, Chairman of Stellantis, 4th; and Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, 42nd.

The reasons for Chairman Chung's selection included practical leadership, differentiated electrification strategies, and competitive products. MotorTrend stated, "If Tesla started the popularization of electric vehicles, Hyundai has enhanced consumer accessibility and activated the market by introducing stylish electric vehicles with diverse models, styles, and price ranges." It also noted, "Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia continue to hit home runs off the field," adding, "With eye-catching design, quality, and reasonable prices, competitors find it difficult to keep up."

The Genesis G90 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 won MotorTrend's '2023 Car of the Year' and '2023 SUV of the Year,' respectively. Last year, Chairman Chung was selected as the first recipient of the 'Visionary of the Year' award among disruptive innovators in the automotive industry by the U.S. news weekly Newsweek.
