[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Wook] Uiryeong Traditional Market in Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam, has been finally selected as a ‘Cultural Tourism Market’ in the Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ ‘2023 Specialized Market Development Project’ contest, which will completely transform the market’s appearance.

The Cultural Tourism Market project is a program that links traditional markets with the region’s history, culture, and specialties, discovering and developing the market’s unique characteristics to foster a space where visitors can enjoy shopping along with tourism.

Uiryeong Traditional Market will invest up to 1 billion KRW over the next two years to promote the Honguijangteo brand development, improve environmental design, create community-type resting areas, establish Honguijangteo specialized food hubs, develop and operate cultural tourism resource linkage programs, and strengthen merchant capabilities.

The county views this project as a golden opportunity to enhance the competitiveness of the traditional market. While promoting the 2023?2024 Uiryeong Visit Year, the county expects a rapid increase in foot traffic due to the opening of the Gyeongsangnam-do Office of Education Future Education Center this year and the creation of the Jagulsan-Hanusan tourism belt next year. The county plans to transform Uiryeong Traditional Market into a distinctive representative market of Gyeongnam by linking educational culture and tourism resources.
