Ye Jisoo, a woman in her 30s who works in an office (pictured), currently posts photos of poems she has transcribed almost daily on her blog. She started transcribing in October 2018. At that time, when she joined a new company, Ye looked for a group where she could create a new habit and communicate with others. Coincidentally, a poetry transcription group was recruiting members, and she joined this group and began transcribing.
While transcribing, Ye became concerned about her handwriting. She said, "In a way, I think this was the real beginning of my handwritten script." Starting in July 2020, she began transcribing in a formal script style. During this period, she took handwriting-related lectures and started practicing formal script. Ye said, "Even though transcription was for self-discipline or habit-building, since it was also a group activity, I felt very embarrassed to show my transcriptions to others." So, for about two to three months, she took online classes and practiced for 20 to 30 minutes daily, and since then, she has been transcribing in formal script.
Ye mainly transcribes poems she finds. In her first year, she tried to avoid duplicates, but by her second and third years, sorting out duplicate poems became a task, so she now transcribes whichever poem appeals to her at the moment. As of January 7, 2023, her blog has over 1,500 transcriptions posted. Considering that there were days when she transcribed two poems a day, this means she has been doing it for over 1,500 days.
Even now, Ye spends between 5 minutes and 30 minutes a day transcribing. She finds it beneficial to be able to focus solely on one activity amid a busy daily life. Leaving a record can become a memory, and if one prefers social media activities, it can also serve as content to share daily.
Ye said, "When I transcribe, I feel my restless mind organizing itself and my rough breathing calming down a bit." She added, "Above all, starting from poor handwriting and seeing the growth process into formal script or other handwriting styles with my own eyes brings an incomparable sense of achievement."
