Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of the political and legal institutions overseeing public security, prosecution, courts, and intelligence, urging efforts to safeguard national security and social stability.
According to the People's Daily on the 8th, President Xi issued directives during the Central Political and Legal Work Conference held in Beijing on the 7th and 8th, stressing that "political and legal work is an important part of the Party and state affairs."
He called on the political and legal institutions to implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party, enhancing their political stance, judgment, awareness, and execution capabilities. He stated, "Adhere to the path of socialist rule of law with Chinese characteristics, reform and innovation, and the spirit of struggle; strive to modernize political and legal work," adding, "We must do our utmost to safeguard the country's political security, ensure overall social stability, and promote social fairness and justice."
This directive is interpreted as an instruction to prioritize national security and social stability in 2023, the year marking the official start of Xi Jinping's third term. In China, the political and legal institutions encompassing public security, prosecution, and courts serve as means to maintain the Chinese Communist Party's one-party dictatorship system.
