[Asia Economy Reporter Minwoo Lee] In a Myanmar prison, inmates revolted in response to torture and beatings, resulting in casualties.

According to AFP on the 8th, the military regime announced the day before that a riot occurred on the 6th at Pathein Prison, located west of Yangon, Myanmar. One political prisoner charged with terrorism died, and 63 inmates were injured. Additionally, 11 police officers and security personnel were wounded.

The military government stated that after a prison guard discovered a mobile phone belonging to an inmate and took disciplinary action, about 70 inmates escaped and damaged prison property. When the inmates attacked with sticks, bricks, and pieces of cement, the guards reportedly fired shots to regain control. During this process, an inmate caught with a mobile phone died, and eight others were critically injured.

The international broadcaster Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported that the protest was triggered after it became known that prison guards tortured and beat inmates who possessed mobile phones throughout the night.
