[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] SK Telecom President Yoo Young-sang and other key executives gathered in full force at CES 2023, the world's largest electronics and IT exhibition held in Las Vegas, USA, meeting with AI companies one after another. This marked an extensive collaborative effort to leap forward as an AI company.

On the 7th (local time), SKT announced that President Yoo Young-sang and others met with U.S.-based AI companies such as Phantom AI, Palantir, Inworld, and Mobilint at CES 2023 to grasp the latest AI technology innovation trends and held in-depth discussions on collaboration plans based on SKT's AI technologies.

Additionally, SKT, along with ICT family companies such as SK Square and SK Hynix, set up a separate ICT meeting room within the CES venue to showcase various AI technologies owned by SKT to global companies, including the AI-based animal video diagnostic assistance service "Excalibur," which won the CES Innovation Award, the AI semiconductor "Sapeon," and the AI-based video recognition solution "Vision AI," and held active business meetings.

President Yoo Young-sang and key executives met with Phantom AI, a U.S. autonomous driving solution specialist company, introducing the technology and application cases of SKT’s AI semiconductor "Sapeon" and discussing cooperation models between Phantom AI’s AI-based autonomous driving solutions and Sapeon.

Phantom AI was established in the U.S. in 2016 by CEO Jo Hyung-ki, the developer of Tesla Autopilot (autonomous driving system). The two companies exchanged views on joint cooperation in the autonomous driving market, discussing cooperation models between the hardware aspect of the Sapeon semiconductor and the software aspect of Phantom AI’s solutions.

President Yoo also met with Inworld, a company developing GPT-3-based conversational AI characters. He discussed ways to enhance SKT’s AI service A. (A-dot) and the Ifland platform by utilizing Inworld’s virtual character creation technology.

Inworld is a Silicon Valley-based startup that possesses technology to create AI characters under user-specified conditions and train them through deep learning. SKT participated in Inworld’s early investment (Series A) last year to secure AI technology.

President Yoo visited the exhibition hall of Palantir, a global big data analytics company, and held business meetings to discuss collaboration plans utilizing Palantir’s big data analysis and management technologies.

SKT’s C-level executives also held active business meetings with AI companies. Key C-level executives met with Mobilint, an AI semiconductor company, exchanging opinions on applying Mobilint’s AI semiconductor software technologies such as deep learning lightweighting and compilers (software that enables deep learning algorithms to run on AI semiconductors) to the Sapeon semiconductor.

In addition, SKT executives visited AI technology companies including Saltlux, which has virtual humans and chatbots; Dassault, a 3D software specialist; and A-Sleep, a sleep-tech company. They also introduced SKT’s technologies and services such as Ifland, Urban Air Mobility (UAM), and Vision AI to satellite company Maxar Technology and discussed various collaboration plans and joint projects.

Earlier this year, President Yoo emphasized the vision of "an AI company that benefits customers through technology and services" in his New Year's address. His recent activities are part of establishing a super-collaborative system with global AI companies that have capabilities and potential to achieve this vision.

President Yoo stated, “At this CES, global AI companies from around the world participated and presented various AI technologies and application cases,” adding, “SKT will actively pursue partnerships with them to leap forward as a global top-tier AI company.”
