[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] Girl group 'NewJeans' is promoting the charm of Hanji paper to the world.

The Korea Craft & Design Foundation announced on the 19th that it has selected girl group NewJeans as a 'Hallyu IP' for the '2022 Hanji Field Hallyu-linked Collaborative Content Planning and Development Support' project.

The Hanji Field Hallyu-linked Collaborative Content Planning and Development Support project was planned to promote the value and charm of traditional Hanji by having Hanji craft and painting artists collaborate with Hallyu cultural artists, and to explore new cultural expansions.

NewJeans will participate in various activities to promote the excellence of Hanji and Hanji cultural products to people worldwide. They will take part in a talk show themed on Hanji and create Hanji lamps made in the traditional method together with An Chiyong, a national intangible cultural asset Hanji craftsman. The entire Hanji experience process will be produced as a promotional video and released on the official YouTube channel of the Korea Craft & Design Foundation in 2023.

Additionally, the Hanji lamps made from flower Hanji paper directly crafted by NewJeans will be sold in a limited online auction starting January next year. Overseas fans can also participate, and all proceeds from the online auction will be used to purchase traditional Hanji to revitalize the Hanji industry. The Hanji cultural products resulting from this project will be showcased at the Ultra Super New Gallery in Harajuku, Tokyo, Japan, from January 6 to 10 next year.

NewJeans' agency ADOR stated, “We hope that the online auction of the flower Hanji lamps and Hanji artworks, which NewJeans made with great care, will be successful and that our cultural heritage Hanji will be widely used around us for a long time.”

A representative from the Korea Craft & Design Foundation said, “Through NewJeans' sincere yet lively experience of Hanji, we expect our traditional paper Hanji to receive global attention and interest,” and added, “We hope for much interest and participation in the upcoming online auction.”
