Gwangju Nam-gu Operates Winter Reading Class for Elementary Students

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is operating winter reading classes with elementary school students at three district-run libraries in the area to welcome the new year of the Year of the Rabbit.

According to Nam-gu on the 5th, the Munhwa Information Library, Pureungil Library, and Youth Library will each present winter reading class programs from the 11th to the 20th.

The purpose is for local elementary school students to encounter various interesting activities while reading books at the start of the new year and to fully enjoy the pleasure of reading through a life with books.

First, the Munhwa Information Library will run the program "Literacy Blossoms" for 1st and 2nd-grade elementary students from the 11th to the 13th.

On the first day, students will learn vocabulary to expand literacy while looking at picture books, and will also learn how to distinguish onomatopoeia and mimetic words, including initial consonant quizzes.

On the second and third days, they will experience inference and creative writing to enhance understanding of texts through the five Ws and one H and comparing scenes in picture books.

At Pureungil Library, a science program that stimulates children's curiosity will be offered from the 18th to the 20th.

The program theme is "Little Scientists Who Read Books," and it is for 1st and 2nd-grade elementary students.

They will explore the role and properties of light by making a light box through games and learn about air circulation through balloon play.

They will also engage in an inquiry activity to learn about the Earth's age through geological layers.

Meanwhile, the Youth Library will conduct the "Wise Philosophy Dictionary" program for three days starting from the 11th to develop philosophical thinking skills in 3rd and 4th-grade elementary students.

During this period, children will read four related books such as "Dad, What is Philosophy?" and participate in learning activities including memorizing famous quotes left by philosophers, creating their own quotes, and open-minded discussions and debates.

A Nam-gu official said, "We have prepared unique programs at each library to provide a meaningful time for our children who are starting fresh in the new year and are on winter vacation," and added, "We ask for much interest and participation in the diverse programs held at the district-run libraries throughout this year."
