"Remember the Values of World Peace, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] On the 4th, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon visited the memorial altar for the late Pope Benedict XVI, located in the underground chapel of Myeongdong Cathedral in Jung-gu, Seoul, to pay his respects and offer condolences.
At the memorial altar, Mayor Oh Se-hoon meditated on the "Prayer for the Eternal Rest of Former Pope Benedict XVI" together with the faithful, entered the altar, offered chrysanthemums, and paid his respects.
The late Pope Benedict XVI, originally from Germany, was elected as the 265th pope in 2005. He was 78 years old at the time of his enthronement and announced his resignation in 2013 due to health reasons. He lived in a monastery in Rome and passed away on December 31 of last year. He is regarded as one of the greatest theologians who worked for world peace and was known to have shown special interest in the situation on the Korean Peninsula, a divided nation.
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said, "The late Pope Benedict XVI personally practiced values such as world peace, forgiveness, and reconciliation, and his life trajectory itself symbolizes forgiveness and reconciliation, which remains deeply engraved in our memories," adding, "I prayed that we could realize these aspirations for world peace even a little more," concluding his condolence visit.
