[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Chinese President Xi Jinping said on the 31st, "Currently, epidemic prevention and control have entered a new stage. Although it is still a difficult time, there is light ahead."
In his New Year's address released that day, President Xi spoke about the recent situation in his country, including COVID-19, achievements and accomplishments for the year, and his future requests. President Xi stated, "Since the outbreak of the epidemic, we have always prioritized the people and life, and through scientific and precise prevention and control, we have maximally protected safety and health," adding, "Through continuous efforts, we have overcome unprecedented difficulties and challenges."
He encouraged, "If we endure and unite, we can win." China maintained a strong 'Zero COVID' policy for nearly three years after the outbreak of COVID-19 but suddenly shifted to a 'With COVID' approach this month, resulting in a surge of confirmed cases across various regions.
Regarding the Taiwan issue, he emphasized communication and negotiation. President Xi said, "China's strength comes from unity," and added, "People may have different demands and different views on a single matter, but this is normal, and consensus should be formed through communication and negotiation."
He continued, "If 1.4 billion Chinese think as one and unite their strength, there is nothing that cannot be done or no hurdle that cannot be overcome," and said, "The two sides of the Taiwan Strait (liang'an, China and Taiwan) are one family. I sincerely hope that compatriots on both sides will join hands and move forward to create the welfare of the Chinese nation."
