[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] The opportunity to attend graduate school classes online and earn a master's degree is expanding.

On the 30th, the Ministry of Education announced that it had selected and approved 20 master's programs across 17 graduate schools to implement the online degree program system for general universities. As a result, the number of master's programs currently in operation, which was 5, will increase to 25.

The online degree programs operate remote class studios to provide a learning environment similar to face-to-face classes, and utilize various learning tools such as real-time coding practice programs and AI-based cheating prevention systems, leading digital innovation based on educational technology (Edutech).

The Ministry of Education formed a review committee consisting of experts from various fields including higher education (remote education), business and administration, humanities and social sciences, science and engineering, languages, and religion. They thoroughly evaluated the operation plans submitted by each university based on △excellence of the curriculum △quality management system for remote classes within the university △remote class facilities.

As a result of the review, 20 master's programs from 17 graduate schools, including Ewha Womans University’s Clinical Pharmacy Department, Pohang University of Science and Technology’s Steel Management Major, and Hanyang University’s Digital Convergence Department, were approved.

These programs presented operation plans that maximize learning effectiveness and secure educational realism similar to offline classes by utilizing various Edutech tools such as metaverse campuses, virtual reality (VR) content, and online team collaboration tools.

These universities must thoroughly manage the quality of their online degree programs by utilizing on-campus remote education management committees and remote education support centers. The Ministry of Education will also support them by sharing operational experiences and facilitating mutual cooperation through regular meetings with operating universities.

Additionally, starting from the 2024 academic year, applications will be accepted until January 30th of next year for bachelor's programs in advanced fields and joint education programs with foreign institutions, with plans to complete the review within the first quarter.

Lee Ju-ho, Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs and Minister of Education, stated, “The digital transformation of universities is both a mission and a challenge of our times, and universities must proactively respond to establish themselves as a driving force of innovation leading social change. The Ministry of Education will do its utmost to support expanding the use of Edutech and innovating the entire university system through improvements in various systems such as the ‘General University Online Degree Program.’”
