Kakao to Fully Return to Office Starting March Next Year... Biweekly Remote Fridays Discontinued [Image source=Yonhap News]

[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Choi] Kakao will introduce a new work system starting March next year that requires office attendance as the default. This means ending the full remote work that had been conducted in a pilot form.

According to Kakao on the 27th, the new work system called 'Kakao On' will be implemented from next year. The principle is an 'office-first' work format prioritizing attendance. The implementation date is set for March 1 next year, coinciding with the lifting of the indoor mask mandate.

When office attendance becomes the default, fixed seats will be provided. The previously maintained 'core time' (mandatory work from 2 PM to 5 PM) during remote work will be eliminated, returning to a 'fully flexible working hours system' where only the monthly working hours need to be fulfilled.

Although office attendance is the default, remote work is not impossible. Flexible remote work can be applied at the discretion of team leaders when necessary.

Additionally, the 'biweekly four-day workweek' will be abolished. Instead, the last Friday of every month will be designated as a 'Recovery Day' off. This will be applied starting January next year.

Kakao has been conducting a 'hybrid work system' combining office attendance and remote work in a pilot form since July. Employees could also choose full remote work if desired. However, the company explained that remote work has limitations in terms of collaboration and communication, prompting the revision of the work system.
