[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) has been selected as an ‘Excellent District’ for three consecutive years in Seoul’s ‘Outdoor Advertising Quality Improvement Evaluation.’

Seoul City annually selects excellent districts by comprehensively evaluating the efforts made by each autonomous district to create a clean urban landscape and establish a proper advertising culture.

This year, the evaluation covered 10 items in three areas: ▲outdoor advertising maintenance and crackdown ▲signboard quality improvement, based on performance from September 2021 to August this year.

Eunpyeong-gu was selected as an ‘Excellent District’ in this year’s evaluation and will receive subsidies from Seoul City for next year’s signboard improvement project.

The district made efforts in various ways to create a pleasant urban landscape. Representative initiatives include ▲installation of facilities to prevent illegal advertisements ▲support project for LED sign installation for small business owners ▲special inspection of illegal advertisements during the election period ▲collection of fines from illegal advertisement defaulters ▲expansion of maintenance vehicles and personnel.

The ‘Installation of Facilities to Prevent Illegal Advertisement Posting’ was implemented in 30 elementary school child protection zones in the Eunpyeong area. Yellow sheets were designed so that drivers near elementary schools can easily recognize the child protection zones. This not only preemptively blocked illegal advertisements but also aimed to create a safe commuting environment.

The ‘Support Project for LED Sign Installation for Small Business Owners’ helped reduce the economic burden on small business owners and prevented illegal advertisements, contributing to the improvement of the urban landscape.

A special cleanup of illegal advertisements was conducted during the 2022 local election period. Illegal election banners that were not approved by the Election Commission or remained after the election were intensively cleaned and cracked down on. Some discarded banners were recycled to reduce resource waste.

Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, stated, “We will continue to take the lead in creating a pleasant and clean city through active crackdowns on illegal advertisements and signboard improvement projects.”
