[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Seoyul] It has been reported that the number of flights between Korea and China is being considered to increase to 100 flights per week.
According to government and industry sources on the 24th, a recent agreement was reached between the Korean and Chinese government authorities to increase the current 65 weekly flights (counting round trips as one flight) between Korea and China to 100 flights (50 flights each by airlines from both countries).
Sources said that Korean airlines are currently conducting practical consultations with various local governments in China, and the new routes and increased flights are expected to commence in January next year.
The Chinese major cities where Korean airlines plan to increase flights or launch new routes reportedly include Tianjin, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Qingdao, Dalian, Shenyang, Shenzhen, Xi'an, and Xiamen.
However, sources noted that the rapid spread of COVID-19 within China may cause changes to the scheduled launch dates of these routes.
Flights between Korea and China drastically decreased since the COVID-19 pandemic but have shown a rapid recovery this year. In early April, the average was only about 13 flights per week, but by November, it had increased to around 50 flights.
