[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seoyoon] S-OIL held the ‘Hero Maritime Police Awards Ceremony’ on the 22nd at the Garden Hotel in Mapo-gu, Seoul, in collaboration with the Korea National Council on Social Welfare, awarding plaques and a total prize of 90 million KRW to eight hero maritime police officers this year.

At the ceremony, S-OIL selected Sergeant Im Seong-rok (37, Ulsan Maritime Police Station, Namhae Regional Maritime Police Agency) as the ‘Top Hero Maritime Police Officer’ and seven others, including Inspector Kim Soo-young (46, Aviation Unit, Central Regional Maritime Police Agency), as ‘Hero Maritime Police Officers,’ presenting them with plaques and prize money.

Sergeant Im Seong-rok, chosen as the Top Hero Maritime Police Officer, personally tied ropes and jumped into the water to rescue three fishermen who were stranded and in life-threatening danger due to high waves and strong swells at Jin-ha Ubong Rock in Ulsan this January.

Ryu Yeol, President of S-OIL, said, “Maritime police officers who risk their lives to rescue others despite difficult sea conditions are true heroes,” adding, “S-OIL will continue to show unwavering interest and support for the maritime police.”

S-OIL signed the ‘Maritime Police Hero Keeper’ agreement in 2013 with the Korea Coast Guard and the Korea National Council on Social Welfare to encourage and boost the morale of maritime police officers who dedicate themselves on the front lines to protect South Korea’s maritime territory and the lives and property of its citizens through rescue of distressed vessels, prevention of marine pollution, and crackdown on illegal fishing vessels.

Since then, S-OIL has continued its sponsorship activities, including providing scholarships for children of fallen maritime police officers, medical expense support for injured maritime police officers, rest camps for maritime police couples, and the Hero Maritime Police Awards.

Jung Bong-hoon, Commissioner of the Korea Coast Guard, presented the Commissioner’s Commendation to the eight awardees and expressed gratitude to S-OIL for its “steadfast trust and affection in supporting the maritime police.”
