[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] LG Uplus announced on the 15th that it is developing a 'university-specialized metaverse platform' that all universities in Korea can easily use.

To this end, it signed a three-party partnership agreement with 'Megazone,' the No. 1 cloud managed service provider (MSP) in Korea, and 'Gala Lab,' a global game developer. The partnership signing ceremony held at LG Uplus's Yongsan headquarters was attended by key executives including Choi Taek-jin, Head of LG Uplus Enterprise Division (Vice President), Lee Joo-wan, CEO of Megazone, and Kim Hyun-soo, CEO of Gala Lab.

The university-specialized metaverse platform features ▲convenience by allowing access through a dedicated website for each university without separate app installation, ▲practical functions tailored to universities' actual needs such as participation in classes and special lectures, admission and employment counseling, and library services, ▲sustainability by enabling use throughout the year from before admission to post-graduation activities across curricular and extracurricular schedules, and ▲security allowing access only to authenticated students and faculty. It is scheduled for official release early next year.

LG Uplus, which is in charge of the overall university-specialized metaverse platform project, plans dedicated spaces and services exclusively for each university and will additionally develop corporate partnership models that can provide benefits to schools and students.

Since the metaverse shares high technical similarity with MMORPG game platforms, Gala Lab, which has global game service success experience with titles such as 'Prif' and 'Lapels,' will lead the development of the university-specialized metaverse platform. In particular, Gala Lab will utilize its gaming technology to develop a web-based metaverse, providing a convenient access environment. Additionally, it will develop game-type content to help students immerse themselves in and enjoy the metaverse campus life.

Megazone will be responsible for configuring and maintaining the cloud infrastructure of the university-specialized metaverse platform and will strive to implement a 'stable service' directly linked to user satisfaction. Furthermore, leveraging its capabilities as Korea's No. 1 integrated game operation service provider, Megazone plans to establish systems for service failure monitoring and response, security, and user VoC (Voice of Customer) response.

Choi Taek-jin, Head of LG Uplus Enterprise Division (Vice President), said, "Education environments are also seeking new changes tailored to the Gen Z generation, who are familiar with digital environments and are not constrained by time and place," adding, "Through the university-specialized metaverse platform, we will contribute to enabling Korean universities to leap forward as future digital leading universities."

Lee Joo-wan, CEO of Megazone, expressed his ambition, saying, "This agreement will focus the capabilities of Megazone Cloud and affiliated companies to ensure a successful platform by leveraging not only Megazone's No. 1 cloud and service operation capabilities in Korea but also the metaverse 3D UX development expertise of Indigo, the VFX (Visual Effects) division."

Kim Hyun-soo, CEO of Gala Lab, stated, "Gala Lab is implementing functions on the metaverse platform that schools and students can continuously use through the accumulated know-how of 20 years as a game company. We have high expectations that domestic and international students will interact through our platform, creating an important momentum where universities' metaverse spaces and reality are connected."
