Uiryeong-gun, Recognized as an Excellent Institution for Local River Maintenance Evaluation for 3 Consecutive Years

Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam was selected as an 'Excellent Institution' in the 2022 Local River Maintenance Evaluation hosted by Gyeongsangnam-do.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Wook] Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, was selected as an ‘Excellent Institution’ in the 2022 Local River Maintenance Evaluation conducted by Gyeongsangnam-do. Uiryeong-gun achieved the remarkable feat of being the only county-level area in Gyeongnam to be chosen as an excellent institution for three consecutive years.

The local river maintenance evaluation was conducted by Gyeongsangnam-do, targeting 18 cities and counties, through two rounds of on-site inspections. The evaluation investigated maintenance performance of local rivers, crackdowns on illegal activities in rivers, and the status of maintenance of river facilities.

Uiryeong-gun received high marks for the appropriateness of budget securing and implementation plan establishment. It also earned good scores for efforts to prepare in advance for natural disasters during the rainy season and to maintain the original functions of rivers through local river dredging projects.

In particular, the establishment of remote control systems such as the Smart Flood Management System and Flood Risk Alert System, which created a proactive integrated response system for river disaster prevention, was recognized as an excellent case.

Uiryeong-gun continuously maintained degraded or damaged embankments and hazardous facilities along 2 national rivers totaling 61 km, 41 local rivers totaling 239 km, and 161 small rivers totaling 178 km.

Additionally, special efforts were made to improve the aesthetic environment of river spaces through collaboration with village residents and related organizations.

A county official said, “We feel a sense of accomplishment in further enhancing the image of clean Uiryeong through local river maintenance. We will prioritize disaster prevention and securing river stability and continue integrated management.”
