Lee Man-hee: "Dismissal motion processed before the start of the national ritual... It only looks like political strife"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Hyun-ji] Members of the ruling People Power Party’s National Assembly “Itaewon Disaster Special Committee” announced their intention to resign en masse on the 11th in response to the opposition party’s forced passage of a motion to dismiss Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min.
Joo Ho-young, the floor leader of the People Power Party, told reporters after a rally condemning the forced passage of the dismissal motion, “The special committee members expressed their intention to resign at today’s party meeting.”
Lee Man-hee, a member of the ruling party and the committee’s secretary, explained the reason for his resignation, saying, “Processing the dismissal motion before the investigation even begins and openly declaring impeachment seems to be an attempt to politicize or turn the Itaewon disaster into a political issue.”
Regarding whether he will respond to the opposition party’s future requests for investigation negotiations, Lee said, “The leadership will make a decision.”
The special committee was established by a resolution in the plenary session on the 24th of last month, consisting of 18 members: 9 from the Democratic Party, 7 from the People Power Party, and 2 from minor parties. The People Power Party members include Lee Man-hee, Kim Hyung-dong, Park Sung-min, Park Hyung-soo, Jeon Ju-hye, Cho Soo-jin, and Cho Eun-hee.
