29 Science Researchers Selected in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seoyoon] S-Oil’s public interest foundation, the 'S-Oil Science and Culture Foundation,' held the '12th S-Oil Outstanding Thesis Award' ceremony and the '4th Next-Generation Scientist Award' ceremony on the 9th at its headquarters in Mapo-gu, Seoul, awarding research grants totaling 338 million KRW to 29 researchers in the field of science.
At the ceremony, co-hosted by the Korean Academy of Science and Technology and the Korean Council for University Presidents, S-Oil presented research grants of 138 million KRW to 12 young scientists and 12 advisors selected for outstanding theses in six fields: mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, chemical engineering and materials engineering, and IT. Additionally, 200 million KRW in research grants were awarded to five next-generation scientists selected in five fields: physics, biomedical science, chemical engineering and materials engineering, energy, and IT.
The grand prize for outstanding theses was awarded to ▲ Kim Daewook, Ph.D. in Mathematics from KAIST, for research on deterministic and probabilistic mathematical modeling and analysis of cell systems with time delay ▲ Seo Junho, Ph.D. in Physics from POSTECH, for research on magnetic and topological properties of electrically conductive van der Waals magnets ▲ Ma Kyungyeol, Ph.D. in Chemistry from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, for research on the growth of single-crystal and layer-controlled hexagonal boron nitride ▲ Kim Nahye, Ph.D. in Life Sciences from Yonsei University, for research on validation of cas9 variants and base editors ▲ Kim Unhyuk, Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering from Hanyang University, for research on performance enhancement of layered Ni-rich cathode materials for lithium secondary batteries through atomic and microstructure engineering design ▲ Hong Nari, Ph.D. in IT from KAIST, for research on the development and application of a neurocell chip platform based on thermoplasmonics-hydrogel for structural and functional regulation of neural networks.
The excellence awards were given to Kim Junha, Ph.D. in Mathematics from Chung-Ang University; Son Byungmin, Ph.D. in Physics from Seoul National University; Han Jiyeon, Ph.D. in Chemistry from KAIST; Kim Eunji, Ph.D. in Biotechnology from POSTECH; Kim Kyunghak, Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering from POSTECH; and Yoo Jaemin, Ph.D. in IT from Seoul National University. The next-generation scientist awards were given to ▲ Kim Beomjun, Professor of Physics at POSTECH ▲ Bae Sangsoo, Professor of Biomedical Science at Seoul National University ▲ Park Hoseok, Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University ▲ Song Taeseop, Professor of Energy at Hanyang University ▲ Lee Hyunju, Professor of IT at KAIST.
An S-Oil official stated, “With scientists who have published outstanding papers in basic science and gained global recognition, the future of Korean science is bright,” adding, “We will continue to support Korean scientists so that they can focus on their research stably.”
Since 2011, S-Oil has established and operated the S-Oil Science and Culture Foundation, an independent foundation supporting pure science, which is rare among private companies. Besides the Outstanding Thesis Award ceremony, the foundation runs various programs to support research and nurture talent in the science and engineering fields, including hosting international academic forums.
