Hwasun-gun Launches 'Water Conservation Practice Campaign' at Goindol Traditional Market

[Hwasun=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyuk-jun] Jeonnam Hwasun-gun (Governor Gu Bok-gyu) announced on the 8th that it conducted a ‘20% Water Saving Practice in Daily Life’ campaign at the Hwasun Dolmen Traditional Market.

The current reservoir rate of Juam Dam, the main water source of the county, is 30%, compared to 58% at the same time last year. If the drought continues, depletion is expected by April next year, making water rationing inevitable in spring and possibly leading to water outages.

Accordingly, about 100 people including Governor Gu Bok-gyu, Ha Seong-dong, Chairman of the County Council, public officials, the Korea Water Resources Corporation, and the local autonomous disaster prevention group promoted water-saving practices to the public centered around the Dolmen Traditional Market.

Participants in the campaign appealed for cooperation in practicing 20% water saving in daily life, including lowering water pressure, reducing shower time, doing laundry in batches, using a cup for brushing teeth, placing water bottles in the toilet tank, and using a dishpan for washing dishes.

Governor Gu Bok-gyu said, “Individual water-saving efforts can collectively become a great force to overcome this crisis,” adding, “Along with the campaign, we will prepare measures considering the mid- to long-term climate crisis situation to respond to the drought crisis.”

Meanwhile, to proactively address the drought, the county held a drought situation assessment and response meeting chaired by the governor on the 23rd of last month and is operating a drought disaster response center immediately.

They are also actively promoting water securing projects such as well development and comprehensive maintenance of existing wells by investing contingency funds in the fields of domestic and agricultural water use.

In addition, the county plans to continuously promote water-saving practices through the county website and blog, posting banners at major locations, campaigns, and distributing water-saving leaflets in apartment complexes to foster a consensus among residents and encourage voluntary water conservation.
